Wicklow Ladies Football Championship County Finals 2021

Wicklow LGFA Junior A Football Championship County Final

Blessington v Tinahely

Two familiar foes face off in the Junior A final at 11:45 to get a big day underway. Tinahely and Blessington have underage structures that are the envy of all and it’s no coincidence that both clubs second teams are contesting this Junior A final with massive work being put in by coaches in both clubs.
Both teams dished out some very high scores in the earlier stages of the championship with the ability to find scores not something that’s likely to hinder either side today. On results so far Tinahely appear to be slight favourites but Blessington will have other ideas and will look to provide a winning start to what is a massive weekend for the Blessington club with their Senior Ladies contesting the B Final tomorrow and men’s team in tomorrow’s Senior Football County Final. It’s no quiet weekend for the Tinahely club either as their Senior Ladies are in action later today in the Senior Final where they will be looking to make it a whopping 7 in a row.
Some star players from that memorable U-16 County Final thriller in Baltinglass will form parts of both squads today and no doubt this one will be equally as thrilling.

Verdict: Tinahely

Wicklow LGFA Intermediate Football Championship County Final

An Tochar v Bray Emmets

The second clash of this County Final triple header in Baltinglass sees last years Intermediate Champions Bray Emmets back to defend their title as they face last years Junior A Champions An Tochar. In normal circumstances the winners of the intermediate championship would have been promoted but Tinahely winning the Leinster Intermediate Club Championship will now see any subsequent Wicklow’s Senior Champions competing in the Leinster Senior Club Championship which sees Bray remaining in Intermediate this year.
Bray Emmets have the marquee names with All Ireland winning inter county stars like Aoife Gillen, Alannah Conroy and Mikaela Shelley powering the BEL cause for numerous years and a lot of teams would sell their granny to have a sharpshooter like Lauren Rowe in their team. The experience and knowhow to win this Intermediate title are going to be massive assets to Bray in today’s final and another title could be just what the doctored ordered if they are to belatedly make that ultimate step up to Senior with a victory today.
An Tochar are not in this game to make up numbers by any means and they have the momentum of last years Junior A Championship title carrying them in to today’s county final. Amy Murphy although not on the Wicklow squad this year is as good a forward as there is at any level and Bray Emmets will need to keep her very quiet which is no easy task. Eve Lacey was player of the match last year in the final and An Tochar will be looking to her to provide another awesome display to give them a platform in the middle of the park. An Tochar have the chance to achieve a historic double this weekend by capturing the Intermediate title in both the ladies and men’s games with An Tochar in tomorrow’s men’s county final against Hollywood and to really put the cherry on top, their Junior C Ladies team are in tomorrow’s county final against Barndarrig.

Bray Emmets were the winning team when both sides met earlier in the campaign and they look a tough nut to crack today.

Verdict: Bray Emmets

Wicklow LGFA Senior Football Championship County Final

St Pats v Tinahely

As rivalries go in Wicklow Ladies Football this is a big as it gets over the last decade as both of today’s finalists have been battling it out for Senior glory in recent years with St Pats the side that has caused Tinahely their scariest moments in the championship.
St Pats will look back on missed opportunities in county finals where they looked to have the Tinahely juggernauts impressive run halted only to never deal the killer blow and each year they came close but just never close enough. It looked like the Wicklow town side had dropped off the pace last year with a very disappointing campaign by their standards and with Blessington emerging as a real force it seemed their outlook was bleak but what a difference a year makes as St Pats have been back to their old best again this year with a huge contingent of the All Ireland Championship winning Wicklow side powering this team and the real strength of their team is that they have a high calibre of player at every position rather than just one or two standout star players. Even with all of that said it still might not be enough with the challenge that faces them but the weekend has kicked off nicely from a Pats perspective as they captured the Junior A Shield last night but capturing that holy grail that is the Senior title is the prize they so desperately crave and today is perhaps their biggest chance of doing that. Mick O Rourke has just had one year at the helm of the Wicklow Town outfit and his form as the Wicklow Ladies Manager would suggest he can really get St Pats firing again and he’s already done that in his first year so there’s plenty to be optimistic about for St Pats fans.
Their aren’t enough superlatives to describe just how impressive this Tinahely side have been and they’ve dominated not only Wicklow Club Football but they added Leinster to that list of conquests and but for the dreaded covid putting an end to the All Ireland Club Championship there’s no doubt that they would have been All Ireland Champions. Although there was no Tinahely representatives on the Wicklow All Ireland winning squad because of issues around the availability of players for the Leinster Club final week, there would have been multiple members spearheading that county team as they have for many years had things been different and many very deserving players of an All Ireland medal. That is all water under the bridge now but that hurt is no doubt going to be a serious driving factor in their approach to today’s final. With 6 titles in a row the possibility of complacency setting in is very real but there’s no doubt that the experience and character of this team will never let that happen. In the Leinster final Tinahely looked human for a large part of that game with Lucy Mulhalls entry to the fray in the second half being the catalyst for the victory.
Both teams got tested to the last on arrival to today’s final with St Pats having to come through two battles of epic proportions with Baltinglass in the space of a week but they won the one that mattered while Tinahely got a real scare from last years finalists Blessington who took them to a kick of a ball with Tinahely’s progression to the final on the line. Both sides are coming in on the back of hard games and it was St Pats who took the victory by two points in the earlier stage of the championship but the question is can they topple the masters of Wicklow Ladies Football and realise the dream while ending the greatest run of any Wicklow Ladies Club. There won’t be anything more than a kick of a ball in this if it goes to form but Tinahely just have the edge on the back of their impressive CV. Mick O Rourke has St Pats firing in just the first year in charge so this is by no means a team that are going away but they have to topple a giant today and it will make for a cracking watch to see if they can!

Verdict: Draw (Tinahely After Extra Time)
