Massive news for the Wicklow Football Team and John Evans ahead of Wicklow’s opening match in the Allianz National Football League with Waterford as Rathnew’s James Stafford has rejoined the panel for another year. The Rathnew man has been a loyal servant to club and county and is a player that is a firm favourite with the Wicklow Fans and this news will wet a lot of undies with excitement in the garden county tonight. The towering Rathnew man has been a colossus at midfield for club and county but he is also a defensive nightmare as anyone who travelled to Portlaoise last year will know only too well as will the Dublin full back line and the legendary Stephen Cluxton who could not prevent the Staff from bagging a goal and a point while managing to give Dublin a big headache despite their control of the game when he was in on the edge of the small square.
A man who has no reverse gear has led his club to glory and winning is something he has been very good at and hopefully we can savour a few more victories with Staff bossing the airways. He backs down from nothing and his steel and strength will galavanise the squad and serve as a big boost to our physicality.
The experience that he will bring can’t be quantified and a presence like his will be a great help to the younger players and that coupled with his physicality and his high fielding will be a major weapon in our arsenal going into the National League. His stats alone from last year are pretty impressive and we look forward to another year of watching him in the blue and gold.
