Weekend Roundup
The Weekend Roundup
It was a massive weekend for many of County Wicklows most prolific sports stars and we round up a few of the most notable stories from the weekend.
SISTER SISTER
Fionnuala McCormack & Una Britton showed what a talented family the Brittons are with their historic joint achievement at the weekends National Cross Country Championships in Abbottstown. In a superb day for the Kilcoole Athletes, Fionnuala took her 9th Senior title while Una was not too far behind her sister for her first podium finish as she came flying home in 3rd position 😀 A proud day for Eoin and Ellen and all the Britton family!
Daina is Elite
Daina Moorehouse does what Daina Moorehouse does best and that’s win Titles! The Enniskerry Boxing Clubs Pocket Rocket became the Women’s All Senior Elite Champion on Live Tv while scooping the Best Female Elite Boxer. Her boyfriend Brandon McCarthy added to the brilliant night by becoming the National Senior Elite Champion (60kg).
Dunlavin Dream Derailed
Dunlavin’s magnificent run in the AIB Leinster Intermediate Football Championship sadly came to an end at the hands of a very accomplished Mattock Rangers in Saturdays Semi Final. These lads have shown that they were more than a match for the best Leinster has to offer defeating the Meath and Westmeath Champions before coming up short to the Louth Champions. On this form they will be a serious player in next years Senior Football Championship and they represented County Wicklow brilliantly!

The Avondale Hurling Maestro Ray Nolan was announced as the next St Pats Senior Hurling Manager taking over from Michael Neary. Widely respected, Ray is one of the premier hurling men in County Wicklow and is easily one of the greatest hurlers Wicklow has produced and if he is even half as talented a manager as he was a player then St Pats have caught themselves a great one. We wish Ray and St Pats all the very best.
Hollwood’s Next Blockbuster Has New Director
Hollywood have been busy in the managerial market this year and have secured the services of neighbouring Ballymore man Jarlath Gilroy. Jarlath inherits a Hollywood side who would be extremely disappointed with their 2019 after being relegated to Intermediate for 2020 but with a very talented squad to pick from, Gilroy will be hoping to bounce right back up straight away like in 2017 when Hollywood stormed to Intermediate glory in their first year down and took the Senior Championship by storm the following year under Mick Murray. Jarlath comes with a seriously impressive CV:
He trained Ballymore Eustace in 2010 and won the Intermediate Club Championship in Kildare and then the Leinster Intermediate Football Championship too.
He moved to Two Mile House and won the Junior Club Championship with them and then went on to win the Leinster and the All Ireland Club Championship with them.
He had a short spell with Blessington and then went to Kilcullen and in 2017 won the Kildare Junior A Championship.
As a player he played for Kildare and Ballymore Eustace and he won a Kildare Intermediate Title and a Leinster Junior title for Kildare and he also managed the Kildare Junior team to win a Leinster in 2003/2004
County – 2 Leinster Under 14; 2 Leinster Under 16; 1 Leinster Minor; 1 O’Byrne Cup. Club – Kildare Junior Championship ’85; Intermediate ’86, Minor ’85 and Under 21 ’88
