John Evans Steps Down As Wicklow Senior Football Manager

Wicklow Senior Football Manager John Evans has opted not to stay on as the Garden County’s Bainisteoir after two years at the helm.

A win over Offaly in the Leinster Senior Football Championship was the highlight of the tenure with the Quarter final against Dublin drawing a large Wicklow support to Portlaoise. The league campaign was one where Wicklow failed to make headway finishing at the foot of the table in the snow affected league with the unofficial league game with Limerick the only win but this took place in the bedding in period to Evans tenure.

This years championship campaign saw Wicklow finish strongly against Kildare in the Leinster opener but were unable to reel in the Lillies and went down to a 2 point defeat while the Qualifier journey took Wicklow to Carrick on Shannon where the home side Leitrim emerged victorious. The league campaign started in Waterford with a come from behind win and Wicklow opened the league well and looked like they had Leitrim on the ropes but a late Leitrim goal gave the visitors the victory and they ultimately went on to promotion with Wicklows league challenge fading in the home stretch but with some improvement shown with a 5th place finish and 3 wins.

We wish John all the best in his future endeavours and the hunt now begins to find his successor.
