Wicklow Abroad – Roy Carthy Newtown

Name: Roy Carthy

Town/Village: Newtown

Club: Newtown

Now Living: Toronto

How long have you been living there?

Nearly a year. Although winter seemed to last for about two years.

Reason For Leaving Ireland:

The option was train 3 days a week or leave the country to get out of it.

Thing you miss the most:

Battered sausage and curry chips.

Person you miss the Most:

Mario in the chipper.

Best thing about your new home:

Some amount of beer gardens (or “patios” as the canucks call them).

Worst thing about your new home:

Calling it “st pattys day” or the fact they sell bags of milk.

Funny story from your time overseas:

Won a few dollars at the horses. Myself and one of the lads obviously had a few too many and we threw away a couple of winning dockets by mistake. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

Funny story from before you left home:

When you’re around the bigun as much as I was, there’s many a funny story.

Person you are glad to be far away from:

The brother Darragh. My god does he talk some scutter.

Is your club better/worse off without you:

Worse. The relegation speaks for itself although they’re on the way back.

What 3 people would you fly to you if you could and why:

The mother and the two nannys.

What person in Irelands love would bring you home:

Trevor O’Brien. I was only gone 6 months and he came to visit.

What person in Ireland’s love would make you want to stay away:

Trevor O’Brien. As I said, I was only gone 6 months and he came to stalk me.
